Husker Looking For Bobsled Gold
The Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia starts in five days. For some in Shelby, Nebraska there will be a familiar face on the bobsled track. A former Husker football player is hoping to make a name for himself on the world stage. Olympic bobsledder Curtis Tomasevicz grew up in Shelby, Nebraska. This is Tomasevicz's second trip to the games. He says "Last time it was all just one big exciting whirlwind. This time I know what to expect a little bit more, I know how to prepare." Tomasevicz is training in Park City, Utah preparing for the Winter Olympics. The former Husker football player is among the top bobsledders in the world. But he's not letting the excitement get in the way of his goal. He says the coaches do a great job of just keeping the athletes focused. Family and friends back in Shelby are also focused, but in a slightly different way... One friend is making shirts and selling them to raise money for the teammates program, and to send Tomasevicz's parents to the olympics. So far Marcus Gillespie has sold 450 shirts and raised nearly $9,000. Tomasevicz says it's that small town pride and attitude that got him to where he is today. And hopefully that attitude will pay off for team USA next week in Vancouver. Tomasevicz is hoping to win the gold medal. But he's also looking forward to the opening ceremonies and just being a part of the Olympic spirit.
Saints Win Super Bowl XLIV 31-17
The New Orleans Saints stymied Peyton Manning, then intercepted him to seal the Super Bowl , rallying to beat the Indianapolis Colts 31-17 Sunday night. Tracy Porter intercepted a pass from Manning -- of all people -- and sprinted 74 yards for a touchdown and a 31-17 lead with 3:12 left. Playing in the Super Bowl for the first time, the Saints went on a 31-7 run after falling behind 10-0 early. MVP Drew Brees went 32 for 39 for 288 yards for the Saints, tying Tom Brady's Super Bowl record for completions. Brees went 7 for 7 on the drive that put New Orleans ahead to stay, with the score coming on a 2-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Shockey. Manning's interception was the game's lone turnover, and he was rolled to the turf trying in vain to tackle Porter.
NU men come up short against KU
Nebraska took a four-point lead with less than 16 minutes remaining against KU, but first-team All-Americans Sherron Collins and Cole Aldrich powered a big second half run to give No. 1 Kansas a 75-64 win over the Huskers at Allen Fieldhouse on Saturday. NU had no answer for the two who combined for 25 points. After the Huskers used a 10-2 run to start the second half, they turned a 37-33 deficit into a 43-39 lead, but then KU went on a 28-5 run over the next several minutes which squashed any hopes of a Husker upset. NU next plays against Baylor on Wednesday at home.
Husker women beat A & M
All-America candidate Kelsey Griffin picked up her 11th double-double of the season with 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead No. 4 Nebraska to a 71-60 victory over No. 12 Texas A&M in front of 10,889 fans Saturday afternoon. Nebraska extended its school-record winning streak to 21 games, while improving to 21-0 overall and 8-0 in the Big 12.Griffin, hit 7-of-12 shots from the field and 7-of-8 free throws, while adding three steals, two charges drawn, a blocked shot and an assist, to help the Huskers avenge a 43-point loss at Texas A&M last season. The Husker are at Kansas on Wednesday.
NU junior breaks indoor track record
The No. 6 Nebraska men’s and No. 13 women’s track and field teams capped the 35th Annual Husker Invitational on Saturday with 13 NCAA provisional-qualifying marks, 14 wins and a meet record by junior Ashley Miller during the two-day meet. Miller started Saturday on a high note for the Huskers, as she took down a 20-year old meet record in the 1,000 meters. Miller, who led from the gun to the finish, clocked a time of 2:49.56 to break the previous record of 2:50.39, set by Missouri’s Val Sauer in 1990. The time topped Miller’s previous best of 2:51.93. Along with Miller’s record on Saturday in the 1,000 meters, the women’s the 60-meter dash record men’s pole vault record were broken.
