Team USA beats Japan
Team USA made up of college all-stars beat a Japan team of college all-stars 4-1 Wednesday night at Rosenblatt Stadium. Japan manager Takasi Kodama said his team had never seen a pitcher like UCLA’s Gerrit Cole who went six innings, allowing six hits and striking out seven to pick up the win. Japan scored its only run in the fourth. Drew Maggi, an infielder from Arizona State led the offense as he tripled, doubled, walked twice and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Maggi was hitting .091 in Team USA’s first eight wins.

Saltdogs handle Wingnuts
The Lincoln Saltdogs handled the Wichita Wingnuts 8-1 as Saltdogs’ starter Jim Paduch (6-4) continued his dominance over the Wingnuts by going seven scoreless innings. Paduch walked three, but struck out five and gave up just six hits. Lincoln, jumped on Wichita starter Luke Massetti (4-6) early. A Juan Camacho RBI single scored the first run of the game, and Juan Richardson followed with a long three-run home run to left. In the third inning, Phil Hawke hit his first triple of the year and scored on a sacrifice fly by Argellis Nunez. Nunez then capped the Lincoln scoring in the fifth with a three-run homer of his own. Massetti went on to pitch a complete game despite giving up eight runs on nine hits. Wichita scored its only run on a throwing error in the top of the ninth. Nunez finished his night 2-for-4 with his 12th home run and four RBI. Rafael Alvarez went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and Richardson’s home run was his fifth of the season. The two teams play game the finale of their three-game series Thursday night at 7:05pm.

Memphis scores late to beat Omaha
The Memphis Redbirds scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 5-5 to beat the Omaha Royals 7-5. The loss, Omaha’s second in a row to Memphis, drops them into fourth place, three games back in the American Conference North. Down 5-3 after six innings, the Royals rallied for a single run in the seventh on a David Lough RBI grounder to cut the Redbird lead to one. In the eighth, former O-Royal, Mike MacDougal gave up a solo homer to Mike Moustakas, his second homer in as many days to make it 5-5 game. In the bottom half, Memphis rallied for a pair of runs against Devon Lowery (0-1). Former O-Royal Ruben Gotay led off the eighth with a walk, went to third on Donovan Solano’s single, and scored on an infield hit from Jim Rappoport to make it 6-5. A batter later, Mark Shorey added an RBI single to make it 7-5. The Royals, now 2-5 on this road trip, plays the final of their four-game series in Memphis against the Redbirds on Thursday night. Philip Humber (4-6) will make the start against Redbirds righty P.J. Walters (4-2).
